Welcome to National Engineers Week 2021! All week, people and organizations everywhere are celebrating the engineering profession in its various forms, and bringing engineering career insight into classrooms. And since it is Engineers Week, I’d like point out a few recent stories that we can share with budding engineers.
Engineering has been more visible to the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic, as companies and individuals have been innovating new medical devices and personal protective equipment to help battle the virus. One of the most successful efforts early on has been the Badger Shield from the University Of Wisconsin Makerspace. GSC has also been helping in the PPE innovation effort, with projects like we did with the Milwaukee Police Department. At the recent 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021, held virtually, Matt Carney discussed how he co-founded Open Standard Respirator to develop a reusable N95-alternative face mask, which he explains in this short introductory video:
NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover landed with nearly-perfect execution, showing what some would consider the pinnacle of engineering prowess. For the first time ever, we have live video of the landing itself, from parachute deployment through final handing of the rover by the incredible Sky Crane. As engineers, I’m certain you will enjoy the NASA Press Conference where they reveal this never-before-seen footage, and explain some of the engineering that went into the entire system:
These two stories show some of the range of engineering’s effect on humanity – from helping in the everyday battle against a worldwide health crisis, to exploring other planets. There are, of course, countless other stories across the engineering profession – and Engineers Week is a perfect time to share your own experiences and knowledge with others. If you have something you’d like to share, let me know by contacting me. Check out the Engineers Week webpage for more information.
